MACHINE SHOP MANAGER


The position serves as a focal point of all machining operations within the company and requires coordination of work with other departmental supervisors, machinists, engineering and management to ensure timely delivery of quality parts. 

A keen eye for detail and great mechanical aptitude are also essential. 

The goal is to manage and produce high quality parts and materials by programming machines to perform the right operations.

  • Set up, program, operate and troubleshoot CNC lathes and mills independently.
  • Ensure a supportive environment and workplace.
  • Day to day management of workshop staff. 
  • Assist in the planning, designing and delivering of new products and programmes. 
  • Oversee production of orders and commissions, and ensure the accurate and timely completion. 
  • Provide a well-run and maintained workshop including building maintenance and other issues in relation to the management of the workshop.
  • Establish and implement effective housekeeping and workshop management systems such as stock control. 
  • Source and arrange for supply of materials and cost-effective use of materials and equipment in the workplace.
  • Understand specifications of the task at hand and the desired result by reading blueprints, mechanical drawings etc.
  • Translate instructions into computer commands so the machines can perform the correct function.
  • Prepare a test run to check if the machines produce outputs according to specifications.
  • Set machines to complete full cycles to fabricate large number of parts.
  • Make any necessary adjustments to produce a better result.
  • Clean, repair and perform preventive maintenance on CNC machinery.
  • Manage organization, safety and maintenance of the machine shop. 
  • Reduce set up time and machining time through process improvements.
  • Maintain all machine shop repair and maintenance records.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to specification using tools such as callipers, height gauges, micrometres, rulers etc.
  • Complete both routine and non‐routine checking, maintenance, calibration, cleaning, fault investigation and rectification of tools, equipment, machines to the standards defined.   
  • Ensure the safe transit of equipment and materials between preparation areas and work areas and safely operate the Forklift.
